this week with a more spirited president obama trading jabs with republican rival mitt romney on everything from immigration to taxes. national polls show the race still very much a toss-up, and swing state surveys continue to tighten. we welcome in our panel this week. so kim, i talked to a lot of democrats this week who were elated by the president's performance. they say that the king is back. he's really rocking now. [laughter] momentum the big mo's with him. what do you think about that? are they right? >> well, i mean, the president certainly made his base thrilled with his performance at the debate. that was one of the things he needed to do. look, there's too many questions coming at the president's campaign. he needed to settle and calm those fears. yes, he succeeded at. what he did not arguably do at the debate is in any stem the damage that mitt romney inflicted in the first debate, which was to expose that he's not really running publicly with a second term agenda. and that's what independents and a lot of undecided voters are looking at that. in that he sounded like someone who

and afghanistan. serious news tonight on afghanistan, as mitt romney committed without any qualification to the idea that troops should be withdrawn from afghanistan in 2014. this is a reversal for mitt romney, in terms of his previous stated conditions on that idea. he previously said i don't think you set hard and fast deadlines. that was to abc news on july 29th. i think the biggest mistake he, meaning president obama has made in afghanistan was announcing the specific date that he would withdraw. he said this president has done an extraordinary thing he announced the date of our withdrawal. that was wrong. mr. romney today just flat out reversing his previous rejection to there being a withdrawal date from afghanistan, as he very tightly hugged president obama on everything from drones to egypt to syria to a number of other matters tonight on which there was less disagreement than we might have expected before the debate. chris matthews? what's your take? >> let me take my favorite role for a minute, my role of critic. you think about the united states. let's talk about our country i

came out with a strong and aggressive performance against mitt romney on foreign policy. the first instant poll from cbs shows 53% of undecided voters say president obama came out on top, just 23% say toward romney. but there are some differing opinions out there. according to cnn poll, only 40% of viewers say romney won but 60% say he is ready to handle the responsibilities of president. and 32% of independents say they are now more likely to vote for romney after last night's performance. that is surprising since by most accounts president obama effectively painted romney as untested reckless and inconsistent when it comes to foreign policy. he also mocked romney's knowledge of the military with the most popular zinger of the night. when romney complained that the navy has its smallest fleet in nearly 100 years, here is the president's response. >> obama: governor we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed. we have these things called aircraft carriers where plan

romney tied at 47% among likely voters. this is a dead heat. but the president is leading in the likely electoral count. the new yoknew yor york times b shows that the president has 288 compared to 2508 for mitt romney. 270 are needed to win the election. the times blog gives president obama a 67% chance of winning the election versus a 32% chance for mitt romney. so far, 4.4 million americans have already cast their votes, absentee ballots, or early votings have been used. later in this show, we'll have much more on what those early voting numbers mean and on the republican efforts to keep democratic votes down. but we start with tonight's lead. mitt romney's playing politics with foreign policy. tonight's debate topic is foreign policy, an area where the president has proven himself time and time again. it's a different story for governor romney. he stumbled on international affairs throughout this campaign. and he has shown an unsteady hand on the tragedy in libya. unsteady and highly political. just hours after ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed at the u.
